Arsene Wenger has confirmed talks to secure Arsenal defender William Gallas on a new contract are progressing well.

Gallas' current deal expires at the end of the season and the 32-year-old has been in negotiations regarding an extension at Emirates Stadium.

Wenger recently admitted that he could relax his policy of only offering one-year deals to players over 30, with reports suggesting Gallas is in line for a two-year contract.

An agreement has yet to be reached, but Gunners boss Wenger appears optimistic that the centre-half will stay in North London.

"Yes, it's going well," said Wenger.

"Let's keep the negotiations confidential. If we get to a conclusion, we will let you know.

"At the moment, I think it's better we don't talk about it.

"It is not long ago [since we last held talks], a week ago, something like that."

Gallas has scored 17 goals in 140 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Chelsea in 2006 and the Frenchman also had a stint as the club's captain.
