Bolton captain Kevin Davies has written off Manchester City's chances of breaking into the top four this season.

The two sides meet at Eastlands on Tuesday evening with City eager to get their UEFA Champions League qualification hopes back on track.

Liverpool regained fourth place after City lost 2-1 at Hull City on Saturday and although the Blues have two games in hand, Tottenham and Aston Villa are also firmly in the fight for the final Champions League berth.

Davies has helped a battling Bolton side punch above their weight for most of his seven years with the Trotters.

Yet for all the money City's Abu Dhabi-based owners have splashed out on new players, he believes the Blues' big names lack the same togetherness to succeed this term.

"I don't think City will be challenging for the top four," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"The top six to eight sides are all great teams spending good money.

"But I think City might miss out on the Champions League this year.

Superstars

"City have some great players but sometimes when you have all those superstars it is hard to get that team spirit."

The ambitious Blues replaced manager Mark Hughes with Roberto Mancini in December and after losing two of their last three league games, Davies feels the boost generated by Mancini's appointment may have already worn off.

"When their new manager came in, you expected a reaction from the players and they won their first three or four games," added the Bolton striker.

"But obviously it has settled down a bit now and maybe they are not as keen to impress."
