Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has signed a new one-year contract at Old Trafford.

The veteran custodian will now remain at United until 2011 and the contract extension will take him past the age of 40.

Van der Sar indicated earlier this month that he was planning to extend his stay at United and the Dutchman was delighted to sign his new deal after thanking the club for the support they showed him following the recent illness of his wife.

"I still feel good and am enjoying my football," Van der Sar told the club's official website.

"This is a great club and I was shown a great deal of compassion and support during a difficult time in December and January for which I am extremely grateful.

"I am looking forward to winning more trophies with this great team."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was happy to secure the keeper's future for another year.

"Edwin's professionalism and dedication to his job and the way he looks after himself has given him the longevity in the game," noted Ferguson.

"That longevity includes such great experience not just at United, but at Juventus, Ajax and on an international level. We are absolutely delighted he is continuing for another year."

The news is a boost for United ahead of this weekend's Carling Cup final with Aston Villa.

Excellent news - Edwin is still one of the top 4 keepers in the Premier in my opinion (and obviously Fergies too) I thought he would call it a day considering his wife's recent illness but he's proved the doubters wrong

Great news, Van Der Sar is such a wonderful keeper, i certainly rate him alongside Schmeichel as one of Manchester United's finest ever, it was just another of Fergie's transfer market masterstrokes to bring him to Old Trafford albeit probably a few years later than it should have been

I don't think this guy gets enough credit for the job he is doing with united. Since Schmeichel united always had error prone keepers. But even at this age edwin is showing that he still among the best keepers in the game today for the sheer consistency and the calmness he provides our defence. And by the way i cannot see what sir alex sees in ben foster, i mean the guy only has good reflexes and thats it. He cannot even kick the ball properly and he looks nervous everytime he touches a ball. We need someone like manuel neuer, he is a great prospect.

This man is a true great ... We can talk about our good/bad keepers in the the past but I think he has been a rock. Our season turned round when for came back from injury/compassionate leave. No coincidence.

Alex Portlock (Cardiff City fan) says...

Why would we want to keep van der Sar until he is past 40 years old by that time he will already be past his best, Ferguson has to understand that it is time for either Foster or Kuszack to get the number 1 shirt, and to allow younger goalkeepers like Ben Amos to develop into a first team player.

Chirag Phakey (Manchester United fan) says...

Im glad to hear that our GK Edwin Van Der Sar has signed on the dotted line for another year, this will well and truely be a wake up call to the likes of Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster to learn from Edwin Van Der Sar for the future.

Jermaine Brown (Manchester United fan) says...

Great news for the club. I don't see how either Kuszack, and especially not Foster, could provide adequate cover or replacement for Van Der Sar.

I m happy for Van der sar and the rest of the team. Van is not just only very good goel keeper he is also a good example for others in terms of commitment and dedication with such experience.

Nick Elias (Cardiff City fan) says...

I think its great that Van Der Sar has been handed a new contract, as he is by far the best goalkeeper that United have had since Schmeichel. Sir Alex has been wise in offering a new deal to him, so it means that Ben Foster will finally be sold, as he looks like a waste of time! Sorry Ben, but your just not up to the standard for Man Utd!

Lee Stewart (Manchester United fan) says...

Edwin has shown a great level and professionalism to the game. His calm attitude has brought a settled defence in recent years and being an amateur goalkeeper myself, I have applied his calmness into my game and he's an inspiration to all goalkeepers of all levels. Edwin is my hero and he's my inspiration as a goalkeeper. Being a United fan, I think he will soon eclipse Peter Schmeichel as one of the great goalkeepers of Manchester United. We all hope he plays as long as he can because I feel that Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster are not up to his standards.

Great news. He's one of the best ever goalkeepers and has shown no signs of age - fantastic news for all United fans.
