Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Federico Macheda is a fortnight away from easing his current striker woes.

The Italy U21 star has not made an appearance for the Red Devils since December after suffering a calf strain.

With Michael Owen out for the season and Danny Welbeck on loan for the rest of the term at Preston, Macheda's return cannot come soon enough for United.

The champions currently have three recognised strikers fit in Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Mame Biram Diouf - but the availability of the 18-year-old would provide a useful alternative for Ferguson's side.

"Macheda started light training this week," said Ferguson.

Memorable

"He has had a long-term injury which has been disappointing for us because he is such a great talent.

"But he should be back in the football side within two weeks."

Macheda has made just five appearances at Old Trafford this season but his impact in their previous campaign left a lasting impression on United fans.

The youngster scored a memorable injury-time goal against Aston Villa before netting a vital winner at Sunderland.

Ferguson also hopes Owen Hargreaves is close to a return after 18 months on the sidelines with knee injuries.

The England midfielder is set to make his return for the reserve team in Thursday night's game against Manchester City.
