Portsmouth striker Kanu admits his first goal since December does not soften the blow of Pompey's defeat to Birmingham.

Avram Grant's side were beaten 2-1 by the Blues at Fratton Park on Tuesday night - just three days after sailing past the same opponents in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Kanu headed home in injury-time for the Premier League strugglers, which brought a much-needed end to his three-month goal drought.

The veteran, though, insists his relief at getting back on the scoresheet was overshadowed by yet another painful defeat for Pompey.

'We played some good football at times in the first half, but didn't play well overall and that is disappointing," Kanu told Portsmouth newspaper The News.

No excuse

'Perhaps we were a little bit tired, I am not so sure.

'But we have to keep on playing, especially in the position we are in. There is no excuse for what happened last night, we just didn't play well.

'I enjoyed my goal and I will always try to keep on scoring, especially when it's been such a long time.

'Hopefully, I can keep doing it for Wembley and get back in the team for that.

'But the most important thing at the moment is the league, so everybody was disappointed."
