Wolves manager Mick McCarthy acknowledges that his side cannot rely upon fortune presenting itself in their battle against Premier League relegation.

The Molineux outfit have only goal difference to thank for keeping them out of the drop zone after a run of four defeats in their last five games, although there has been an element of bad luck in the past month.

That was epitomised by a succession of escapes for Manchester United in last Saturday's victory for Sir Alex Ferguson's side in the Midlands, where the defending Premier League champions were let off the hook on several occasions.

But there was also no excuse of misfortune in Sam Vokes' horror-miss close to the final whistle and McCarthy recognises that his side need to make their own luck in their 10 remaining games of the season.

"Of course you've got to have luck sometimes," he told the Birmingham Mail. "If the ball goes in off someone's backside, then there has to be an element of good fortune.

"But we've got to make our own luck as well and we will make our own luck playing the way we're playing.

"We won't make any luck playing badly, that's for sure. But we'll get that luck by playing as well as we're playing and we're playing well at the moment."

He added: "We have 10 league games and it's about picking up points. If you get so up when you win and so down when you lose, there's no point.

"It's a season of 38 games that will go to 5pm on 9th May. Who's to say it won't go until then? Who's to say it won't be Michael Kightly who slides one in and keeps us up, or Sam Vokes or Jody Craddock?

"Despite how those players must be feeling right now, who's to say it won't be that way? And if that happens, all the current results will be forgotten."
