Chris Iwelumo believes he can help Wolves secure Premier League survival, although Gary Johnson would be glad to keep him on loan at Bristol City.

Iwelumo is to play the last game of his current month-long deal with the Championship side away to Reading on Saturday.

City boss Johnson is hoping to open talks with Wolves about the possibility of extending Iwelumo's loan spell.

The Scotland international made a lightning start to last season, scoring 15 goals in his first 16 games for Wolves, but has struggled with injuries since Lee Carsley's horror tackle put him on the sidelines last April.

The 31-year-old made just two league starts for Wolves this season before joining Bristol City but believes he is back in shape having scored twice in six games for the Robins.

"I joined Wolves last year and I really hit the floor running there," he told skysports.com.

"I had a little dry patch around Christmas and then picked up a bad injury when Lee Carsley's tackle finished off my season.

"I missed the last seven or eight weeks of the season, which was disappointing, but I came back strongly in the summer and did the same pre-season training with everyone else.

Devastating

"I then broke my foot two or three weeks into pre-season, which was devastating.

"I just had to get myself focused on the rehabilitation program and concentrate on getting back to full fitness, but when I did get back I fractured it again, so I haven't had the best of luck on that front recently.

"I've not looked back since coming back, though, and I'm now back up to speed in terms of getting my fitness levels back up, so I feel like I can offer something different back at Wolves now."

But Iwelumo, who scored the only goal in the Robins' 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Tuesday, could remain at Ashton Gate with Johnson in regular contact with Wolves counterpart Mick McCarthy.

"I'm in dialogue with Mick McCarthy," Johnson told the club's official website.

"We've had a chat about a few variables and I'm happy with that. We've promised to speak to each other again on Sunday morning.

"We really can't discuss anything more until after the Reading game."
