Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes his team have the chance to create history and eclipse rivals Liverpool.

United are level with their Merseyside foes on 18 league titles each but the Red Devils chief is desperate for his side to claim their 19th trophy and be the first club to win four in a row.

Ferguson's side sit at the top of the Premier League, two points ahead of Chelsea, and the United chief believes it is possible to fulfil his 1986 prophecy, when he joined the club, of, 'knocking Liverpool off their perch'.

"Winning this 19th league title is very much in my soul," Ferguson said in The Sun.

"We are chasing four titles in a row - that would be fantastic.

"And if we get the 19th it would be the most in the league's history. We've got a chance."

Boost

An added boost to United's historic title bid is the return of defensive partnership Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic after lengthy injury spells have kept the pair apart in the heart of the back four.

Sunday's Premier League clash against Fulham will be the first time this year the Englishman and Serbian have played three successive games together.

"When I see the two of them together there is a sense of security that we have been fighting for all season," Ferguson said.

"They have got the experience, authority and understanding with each other."

The Scotsman admitted that panic set in when Ferdinand suffered his most recent back scare after previously spending three months on the injury table with a similar problem.

"It was only a twinge, but Rio panicked a little bit, as we all did," he said.

"It felt like a case of, 'Here we go again', but he is fine and looking good."
