Brian Laws admits Burnley's defeat to Wolves was a "devastating blow" to their relegation scrap.

The Clarets were dealt two bouts of misfortune when Wanderers' midfielder Matt Jarvis pounced on a weak Tyrone Mears header and slid it past Brian Jensen before tapping it into an empty net.

The Turf Moor faithful were further stunned when an off-target strike from Adlene Guedioura came off the heel of Clarke Carlisle which diverted past Jensen for 2-0.

"It's devastating because we've obviously got to rely on the fact that we pick up points particularly from teams around us," Laws told Sky Sports.

"But you can't predict results and certainly you couldn't predict the first goal that we were going to give away.

"It was an individual mistake, we've had these in the last few weeks and they're costly, but we still had enough time to turn it around and react.

Devastating blow

"I thought we were very positive particularly in that last period of the first half but it was a devastating blow to go in at half-time one-nil down."

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss praised the reaction of his players, describing their second-half display as "awesome".

Laws said he was disappointed with the reaction of some of the fans who booed when he took off tricky winger Chris Eagles for Steven Thompson after the interval.

However the substitution proved its worth as Thompson pulled a goal back for the home side, but despite several chances the Clarets could not force the equaliser.

"We are very disappointed there's no doubt about it, but we've got to pick ourselves up, we've got eight games to go," said Laws.

"It is a scrap and each game that goes by, nobody is interested in how you play it's about the results and if we don't get them at home, we've got to go away from home."

Burnley will be assessing the injury to set-piece specialist Danny Fox who left the field early in the game and was taken to hospital with a suspected cracked rib.
