Sir Alex Ferguson has said he was delighted with Manchester United's determined display in the 3-0 win over Fulham.

United were the dominant force against Roy Hodgson's side ,who struggled to contain their opponents throughout.

Having held United to a goalless draw for the first half, they were then outclassed in the second, falling to a 3-0 defeat which sent United back to top spot.

Lending praise to the Cottagers, Ferguson said the win was by no means easy.

Delighted

"I'm delighted," he told Sky Sports. "Fulham made us work hard and made us chase for possession.

"They have some very clever and very experienced players. They made it difficult for us."

Fulham somehow managed to keep United at bay throughout the first half, which Ferguson admits was frustrating.

A change of tactics to up the pace appeared to have worked the oracle, though, with United scoring soon after the whistle in the second half.

"We had to try and increase the pace a bit," said Ferguson.

"Our start was important. Once we got the early goal in the second half we were much more confident.

He joked: "I had just found my seat. It was a good goal, well timed and a terrific opener for us."

Tight at the top

The win sends United top of the table, albeit by a small margin in what is still a wide open title race.

Reflecting on the matter, Ferguson said: "You have to think about goal difference.

"Now we're four goals ahead of Chelsea but, to be honest, I wish it were 14."

The United boss paid credit to Rooney, admitting that the striker now has a chance of matching Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 42 goals in a season, having initially said it was impossible.

Ferguson said: "He's on 32, what can I say? There's a challenger all of a sudden."
