Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick admits he would hold no qualms over winning the Premier League on goal difference.

United currently lead Chelsea and Arsenal by two points at the top of the table, albeit having played a game more than the Blues, and at present hold a superior goal difference than their rivals.

The champions, bidding for a record fourth straight title, have Wayne Rooney's prolific form to thank for their healthy goals tally, with 25 goals making him the league's top scorer.

The Premier League has never been decided in such a manner, but with such a marginal amount separating the top three teams with less than 10 games to go, Carrick is wary of the possibility of goal difference playing its part.

"The only thing we can say is that it's going to be very tight and it looks as though it could go down to the very last game of the season," Carrick told Sky Sports News.

Rooney praise

"We're scoring some good goals and plenty of them at the minute. Hopefully that can continue and if we need to win it by goal difference then we'll take that."

Carrick is the latest United player to voice his praise for team-mate Rooney, who has an incredible 32 strikes in all competitions so far this term.

Former Tottenham midfielder Carrick believes Rooney is constantly improving as a player and has backed the England international to carry his form into this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

"He's obviously playing really well is Wayne. He has been for a number of years, really," added Carrick.

"He's scored a lot of goals this season and gained a lot of headlines, he seems to be getting better and better.

"I'm sure he'll continue that for the rest of the season and on into the summer."
