The Red Knights are hoping to persuade the chairman of Britain's biggest quoted hedge fund to join their quest to wrestle control of Manchester United away from the Glazer family.

Jon Aisbitt, a United fan and chairman of MAN Group, has been targeted as a potential investor in the reigning Premier League champions.

The Glazers and United chief executive David Gill have consistently denied that the club is for sale, but pressure from disgruntled supporters continues to mount.

The Red Knights have emerged as the most likely candidates to take charge at Old Trafford and the recruitment of Aisbitt would considerably aid their cause.

Aisbitt is a wealthy former Goldman Sachs partner and fits the bill of Red Knights leader Jim O'Neill.

The chief economist of Goldman Sachs and one-time friend of Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to raise funds for a takeover bid and has already secured considerable backing.

The Red Knights have stated that their aim is to raise £1billion to buy-out the Glazers, who are reported to have plunged the club into £716.5million worth of debt.
