Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is facing a race to be fit for the start of the new season after undergoing groin surgery.

Drogba was troubled by the groin injury throughout last season and he was booked in for the operation after competing at the World Cup with the Ivory Coast.

Chelsea revealed Drogba had successfully undergone "minimal invasive surgery" and he is set to be sidelined for three weeks.

A Chelsea statement read: "Didier Drogba successfully underwent minimally invasive surgery yesterday on the groin injury that had troubled him for some of last season.

"The decision to perform the procedure after his return from the World Cup was made to optimise his rehabilitation, and he is expected to return to full training in approximately three weeks."

It means last season's top scorer will miss the next month's Community Shield clash with Manchester United and is a major doubt for the Premier League opener against West Brom.

Drogba joins Petr Cech and Alex on the sidelines to add to Carlo Ancelotti's injury problems.
