Newcastle have been rocked by the news that Steven Taylor is facing three months on the sidelines.

The defender was forced out of the Magpies' opening pre-season game against Carlisle earlier this month after suffering a shoulder problem.

Manager Chris Hughton had previously expressed hope that Taylor would be fit for the start of the new campaign.

However, he has now had to undergo surgery and Newcastle have confirmed that he is expected to be out for around three months.

The 24-year-old, who has been at St James' Park since the start of his career, missed four months with a dislocated shoulder back in 2006.

The latest injury is likely to keep him on the sidelines until the end of October, meaning he will have to sit out a large chunk of Newcastle's first season back in the Premier League.

Hughton will be disappointed to lose Taylor, although he did bolster his defensive options on Wednesday by signing veteran centre-back Sol Campbell.
