Skysports.com understands Wigan are hoping to beat Blackpool to the signing of Swansea defender Angel Rangel.

Premier League new-boys Blackpool are believed to have made an offer for highly-rated full-back Rangel as Bloomfield Road boss Ian Holloway looks to add to his squad.

Rangel's future at Swansea has been the subject of speculation for some time with the Spaniard attracting interest from the Premier League.

Wigan have held a long-term interest in Rangel with Latics boss Roberto Martinez a big fan of the defender having worked with him during his time in charge at the Liberty Stadium.

Rangel only has one year left on his existing contract and Swansea may opt to cash in on the defender now rather than risk him leaving on a free next summer.

The 27-year-old has never hidden his desire to try his luck in the Premier League and Wigan could firm up their interest before the close of the transfer window as they look to win the race for the player's signature.
