Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson has penned a new three-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

The 25-year-old, who has made 85 appearances for the Black Cats, scoring 8 goals, will remain on Wearside until the summer of 2013.

Richardson, who has also played at left-back under manager Steve Bruce, joined the Black Cats almost three years ago from Manchester United on an initial four-year contract.

The midfielder, who came up through the ranks at Old Trafford and previously at West Ham, also spent six months on loan at West Brom in the 2004/05 season.

Richardson scored just once for Sunderland last season, in the 2-2 home draw with West Ham in October, and was dismissed in the 2-2 draw at Manchester United earlier that month.

His high spot in a red and white shirt was scoring an impressive free-kick which saw off Newcastle a year earlier and gave the Wearsiders their first home league success over their arch-rivals for 28 years.
