Gomes: Names mean nothing
Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has warned Manchester City that money is no guarantee of success.
The Blues have been busy in the transfer market this summer, splashing the cash in an effort to close on the Premier League's top four.
They were pipped to a UEFA Champions League spot by Spurs last season and are determined to avoid missing out again in 2010/11.
There will, however, be plenty of other sides looking to join European football's top table this time around, with Aston Villa, Liverpool and Everton all harbouring realistic ambitions.
Tottenham have no intention of surrendering their spot either and Brazilian goalkeeper Gomes has told City that their big-spending approach could be their undoing.
He believes team spirit is more important that star names and thinks it will take time for the Blues' new-look side to gel.
"You never win things with big names alone, you need to do it as a team, not only as names," said Gomes.
"They have lots of big-name players, but last season I don't think they performed at their best.
"With the players Manchester City have, they need to do better than they did last season.
"If they put all their names on the pitch and work as a team, then it will be a great team."
