Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier gave nothing away when asked if he was set to take up a role with Aston Villa.

Reports have suggested the Frenchman is to head a new 'boot room' at Villa Park, where ex-boss Martin O'Neill resigned shortly before the start of the season.

It is rumoured that Villa owner Randy Lerner has interviewed Houllier to act as a director of football, with caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald and former Villa player Steve Staunton in coaching roles.

But 63-year-old Houllier would not comment on the speculation when he arrived for Jamie Carragher's testimonial game against an Everton XI at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

"Never and always are two words you can't use in football," he said.

Houllier last managed in the Premier League with Liverpool, leading them to a Uefa Cup, FA Cup, League Cup treble in 2001.

He left in 2004 and went on to take in a spell in charge of Lyon between 2005 and 2007.

Houllier is currently a technical director for the French Football Federation.
