Martyn Waghorn rejoined Leicester because he did not think he was offered a fair chance to stake a claim for a first-team place at Sunderland.

The striker returned to the Walkers Stadium on summer transfer deadline day after an excellent season-long loan with the Foxes in 2009/10.

Waghorn finished top scorer for Leicester in the last campaign after netting 12 goals, but that was not enough to impress Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, who signed Danny Welbeck and Asamoah Gyan.

The 20-year-old was therefore happy to seal a £3million permanent exit from the Stadium of Light, despite joining the Black Cats' youth set-up in 1998.

Shame

"It wasn't that much of a wrench having to leave," he told The Chronicle. "It was just sad they didn't give me a chance and I didn't get a fair crack of the whip.

"It was sad to be leaving after 13 years at the club but it has happened and I have to move on now. That's football.

"I am at Leicester now and I'm there for the next four years, so hopefully I can do a job for the club.

"Steve Bruce called me and told me what was going on so it was nice to get that phone call.

"It is nice to have heard that the fans cared, it is a shame I didn't get to show them an awful lot."
