Gerard Houllier is due to meet French Football Federation president Fernando Duchaussoy on Wednesday amid reports he is poised to become the new Aston Villa manager.

Duchaussoy will hold discussions with the former Liverpool and Lyon boss when he returns from France's Euro 2012 qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo on Tuesday evening.

Houllier, who is currently the national technical director of French football, is expected to take the Villa Park post vacated by Martin O'Neill in the summer.

"I will meet Wednesday to take stock of the situation with him (Houllier), I'll ask him," said Duchaussoy.

"I would like to continue working with him."

Houllier is set to join Villa as manager rather than in a director of football-type role, while the club want caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald to stay involved in the first team set-up in a coaching capacity.

But former Liverpool player MacDonald will make the final decision on whether he wants that sort of involvement or if he would prefer instead to return to the helm of the reserve team.

Impressed

Houllier, who left Anfield six years ago, impressed Villa owner Randy Lerner after being interviewed by the American mogul.

The 63-year-old has been employed as Les Bleus' technical director since departing Lyon in 2007.

Houllier enjoyed considerable initial success with the Reds and guided them to a UEFA cup, FA Cup and League Cup treble in 2001.

Before he moved to Liverpool, he also enjoyed title success with Paris St Germain and spent a decade overseeing the development of French football.

Lerner and Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner have also interviewed former West Ham boss Alan Curbishley, ex-England boss Sven Goran Eriksson and MacDonald for the managerial post.

Edward Wylie (Aston Villa fan) says...

If GH comes to villa i will not be renewing my season ticket for next year, what we need is someone with tactical knowledge, discpline and a good motivater. i believe Moyes would fit the bill, Big Sam, Pulis or maybe even Hiddink.

Kevin Hadfield (Liverpool fan) says...

I dont think gerard is the right manager for villa. He won a lot of trophies with us but he also spent a lot of money in the process and bought a hell of a lot of flops ( Diouf,Biscan,Diao,Heskey etc). He hasnt managed a club for a while at a level as high as the prem.. i dont think u can class lyon as a top quality side.At villa im assuming he wont have too much money to spend,so how good will his eye for a bargain be? Also he has a stubborn streak and could give some of their top players the cold shoulder if he takes a dislike i.e. Friedel and Warnock.

John Salter (Aston Villa fan) says...

As a Villa fan I hope this story is not true and Kevin MacDonald gets the job especially after 15 years loyal service at Aston Villa where he has won everything with the reserves. If GH comes and brings with him Phill Thompson as assistant coach, I will not set foot in Villa Park until both are gone. I am sick to death of disloyalty in football and these two have nothing to do with Villa and Thompson is Liverpool through and through who has only ever belittled Aston Villa over the years!
