Roberto Martinez has paid tribute to Charles N'Zogbia for his attitude since failing to secure a move away from Wigan.

The French winger requested a transfer during the summer and looked set to join Birmingham after the Latics accepted an offer.

A possible switch fell through after personal terms could not be agreed and N'Zogbia ended up staying at the DW Stadium despite reports of late interest from Stoke.

Martinez has since told the player that he must prove himself to his team-mates again and fight for a place back in the side after being left out of the 1-0 victory over Tottenham.

The Spanish manager has been impressed by his response since being issued with such a challenge and says N'Zogbia is now very much in contention for Saturday's clash with Sunderland.

"I feel that whatever the thoughts were and whatever the different options were that he had to consider, that is well in the past," said Martinez.

Delighted

"Now he is ready, he is focused and all he wants to do is help Wigan Athletic to carry on being competitive.

"From his position, he is ready to show everyone that he wants to enjoy his football with us."

Asked if N'Zogbia was in his thoughts for the Sunderland game, Martinez said: "He is, but not just because I'm saying it. It is the way he has been working in the last five (training) sessions.

"I have been delighted with Charles' attitude. He looks focused and concentrated.

"He made the final decision to stay - it wasn't imposed on him at all, so we have signed a new player."
