Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that striker Wayne Rooney "may be on the bench" for Saturday's Premier League match against Wigan.

The England international has not featured for club or country since a substitute appearance in the 2-2 draw with West Brom in mid-October.

Rooney has officially been recovering from a long-standing ankle injury and he has been spending time rebuilding his fitness in America.

But it has also been speculated that the 25-year-old was ordered out of the spotlight by Ferguson in the wake his much-publicised and damaging U-turn regarding his United future.

Rooney eventually signed a new five-year contract at Old Trafford at the end of October after previously indicating he would leave.

Doubts

The former Everton star was then allowed to travel to Dubai to celebrate his birthday to mean that he has been unavailable for selection and has yet to return to full training.

But he has done a sufficient amount of work to be considered for a spot on the bench against Wigan, and Ferguson has confirmed Rooney will definitely play some part in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League encounter with Rangers at Ibrox.

"I don't think he'll start tomorrow," Ferguson told radio station Key 103.

"Maybe he will reach the bench. But he will certainly play on Wednesday against Rangers."

Ferguson also has doubts over Ryan Giggs and Rafael as United look to close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Neil Simpson (Manchester United fan) says...

I think some of the United fans and Rooney are in for a shock when he next puts on a United shirt and takes to the field. I think the media will also be sursprised as there is a large section of United fans that would like to see the back of him, some of the things he said against the club and manager are inexcusable. The lad will get booed there is no doubt in my mind about that, he's has done this before to Everton and their fans have never forgiven him. He is but one player we are Manchester United and we have lost better players than him in the past and still survived to fight on another day. Rooney will get what's coming to him if he plays at the Wigan match.

James Kenny (Manchester United fan) says...

I'm glad to have Rooney back, and as long he wants to stay with United I am happy to support him. I do think that he will come on tomorrow for about 30min at the end, I think we need to ease him back just so the fans and the press cant give him to much stick either way, and he could be the hero if he nets a couple of goals. The most import thing is that he gets fit and ready for the Arsenal, Chelsea, and the next round of Champions League games, Fergie has a system and none of our stikers seem to fulfill that role as well as Rooney can.

rooney is young? he's 25 its not that young anymore. fair enough if he was like 19/20 or something but at 25 you'd expect him to not take "bad advice" when will man u fans wake up and realize that rooney help your beloved club to ransom because he's greedy and thinks he is better than what he is. as for the match im guessing another draw for Man u

Terry Jenkins (Manchester United fan) says...

Great news that he is back, I am sick of hearing all the United haters saying "he is burnt out", & that " his finished". Welcome back Mr Rooney. With him back I really believe we can make a real push for the title. He goes by the name of Wayne Rooney

I think on Saturday will play maybe around 30mins to get him some game time before he plays against rangers. I hope myself that he contributes with a few goals at wigan and rangers but it will take a while for him to be the player he was last season. The sooner the better anyway.

After the recent events surrounding Rooney, it will be intresting to see how many fans chant Rooneys name and how many Rooney shirts get printed in the club shop.

At last some good news about Rooney i know there are a few supporters not willing to forgive him but like SAF said he is young and was badly advised by an agent, lets get behind Wayne and he will be our star player once again ...we certainly need him that is for certain ..Come on you reds !!

Colin Smith (Manchester United fan) says...

If Rooney returns and recaptures last season's form United will blow the rest of the league away, with 3 defeats already this season Chelsea are nowhere near the team they used to be, Arsenal will begin to crack when the pressure gets too much and Man City are just not good enough, United have played without a couple of key players this season and remain undefeated, what will they be like when they get the likes of Valencia and Rooney back again...exciting times for the Reds!!

Simon M (Manchester United fan) says...

This is good news, get half an hour or so against Wigan, an hour against Rangers and then 90 against Blackburn. Hopefully the fans will get behind him and he will chip in with a few goals. A fit Rooney can only be a good thing for United. If he can get anywhere near the form he showed last season he can fire us to the title.
