Newcastle legend Alan Shearer insists he will not become the next manager of his beloved Magpies.

Shearer is a 16/1 shot with Sky Bet to step back into the St James' Park hot-seat following Chris Hughton's shock departure on Monday.

But the former England striker, who failed to keep the Magpies in the top flight in 2008 in his previous stint in charge of the club, has ruled himself out of the running.

The 40-year-old said: "I won't be the next Newcastle manager. I can guarantee you that.

"I have said never say never but I can guarantee I won't be the next Newcastle manager."

Questioned logic

Shearer also questioned the logic of the Newcastle hierarchy in sacking Hughton after he guided the Magpies back into the top flight, where they currently occupy 11th place.

The former No.9 said: "I wonder to myself where they think Newcastle should be, if they think they should be higher than mid-table because I'm not being disrespectful to the squad but they're not going to be in the top six or seven.

"That isn't Newcastle's season. Newcastle's season this year should be all about staying in the Premier League.

"At this moment in time there's no danger of them (being relegated).

"They'll be there because there's teams that are worse than them.

"For me, Chris was doing a very, very fine job."

The directors should not have sacked chris hughton as we are still in the top flight of the premier league. MA and DL should have walked away last time there was a crisis at the club.

Quite honestly, I have been a supporter for 52 years, and this team is probably the most dis-jointed that I have ever seen wearing the black & white stripes, several of the players should be playing in the Northern Amateur league, although on second thoughts they probably wouldn't get a game there. Lets hope they get a manager with some motivational skills. Sorry Chris you did a great job getting this lot back in the Prem. But this current team will not keep them there. You are better off out of it. Ashley get out while you can or spend some real money on players.

What is wrong with that man (ashley)? Chris Hughton rebuilt all the team spirit that went missing the season we went down. He got us back up. Ok so weve had some weird results especially at home but who hasnt? The top 4 havent had it easy . He wants to remember hes running a football club not a sports shop. The man hasnt got a clue about football and i doubt we will ever hear him explain his actions. Good luck Chris hope you get a job very soon , im sure you will. Youve done nothing wrong in my eyes!!

Will B says...

The sacking of Chris Hughton is disgraceful, what he has done for the club has been fantastic brining out the best in the team and leading them straight back to the EPL. He has restored balance to our great team and for him to be treated like rubbish is unnacceptable. Mike Ashley has only one desire and that is to make as much money as possible and the sooner he seels our beloved club the better because he is running it into the ground. Chris Hughton has brought out the best in Andy Caroll who now will start more often for England, the best out of Joey Barton who frankly has been one of the players of the season so far, and Kevin Nolan who has played consistently well all season so far. On top of this he kept as many of the players as we could last season and brought in some great talent (Hatem Ben Arfa) with little money due to a selfish and irresponsible owner.

This just tops the lot ,ashley and his men, quote we all make mistakes, well you lot keep making them, you cannot stay in the premier league if you spend no money, chris hughton did a fantastic job with Newcastle United, just shows what kind of job you are doing ,get the club sold and let this club live, because theres only one way the clubsgoing under Ashley and thats down

Yet another epic saga at Newcastle Utd!Hughton gets sacked which is just unreal to be honest, should have been given the season at least to see what happens.Mike Ashley again has messed up,he's a disgrace to this club and its time for him to go along with Llambias. The way they treat the managers that have been here are pathetic, look at the likes of Man Utd,Arsenal who have never changed managers for years and see where they are including what they have won. Shearer should step in with new owners at the helm and who splash millions on players every season for us to be in the top four and win trophies at domestic level and Champions league level too. This is like a circus at the moment the way the club is being run!!

Fred Poole (Newcastle United fan) says...

It's ridiculous to think that Alan Shearer would ever want to be associated with Mike Ashley at Newcastle. Actually, it's ridiculous to think that anybody would want to be associated with the current owner and management - except maybe Joe Kinnear. Chris Hughton has done a great job getting the team to play as a team; I find it amazing that he's been sacked after bringing the club back from the Championship in such a fantastic manner. That being said, it is Newcastle afterall, and if we're not looking for a new owner, we're looking for a new manager, or somebody, ANYBODY to bring this club to the top of the table, or at least play exciting football!

Jason Fitzgerald (Portsmouth fan) says...

madness, typical newcasltle!! sorry to all my friends who are geordies, but i am amazed at this, houghton stabalised the club, and got tyhem up, and was doing a pretty good job on the whole, staying up must have been the only job to complete, but,and most of my newcastle friends will agree, when they win, they are the best ever and the manager is on fire, but when they lose, the heavens descend! Has anyone ever met a happy geordie?

Wor Al never declared an interest in the job, barnsley fan there jog on and get your facts right. Shearers not ready but his time will come when he is. Painfully frustrating set of events as usual, but this tops the lot. Ashley out.

I wouldnt mind seeing frank rijkaard come on board. perfect opportunity for him to test himself in the premier league and weve all seen what he was able to do at barcelona. gutted for chris hughton but if we can get someone in like frank then it could be a saving grace.

I know a mate, who knows a mate (genuinely guys) that works on VIP check-ins at Manchester Airport....The sort you've probably seen on Airline and programs of a similar ilk. He assures us, Maradonna flew in tea-time today from somewhere in Europe (possibly spain).....His booking on this flight was seen last minute from the guys in Manchester, hence they had around 40mins to prep. Not sure where he went after that, but this is A1 info....Same guy told me Mancini was staying at an Airport hotel 3 days before he was hired by City. This story will gather pace......

BIG MISTAKE I THINK! Mike ashley has probably now condemned newcastle to relegation or a battle with the likes of the hammers this will not have a positive effect look whats happened to chelsea after sacking ray wilkins its not a coincidence that they have dropped so many points, who is going to come in now and do any better?

Richard Hepple (Newcastle United fan) says...

The whole things a joke i believe i speak for most newcastle fans in saying we can't take much more. Why? What next? I think its about time Ashley made a statement to try and make sense of what he is doing and why! When Chris was in charge the fans expectations were realistic we are not a top club and wont be for a long time. He had the team working for eachother and thats what we like. I have personally had enough and hope he sells very soon and gets somebody in who understands our club id rather have freddy shepard at least he spoke to the fans. HELP!

Lee Mercer (Manchester United fan) says...

It is a disgrace what Ashley as done. Chris Hughton gets them promoted. Which is what how many other managers couldn't do. And gone to grounds like stamford bridge and the Emerites and get results. Which teams above newcastle in the league have failed to do. Teams who have been longer than newcastle have. What more do they want from him its a disgrace.
