The USA international had been on trial at Molineux, in the hope of securing a move to England after allowing his contract at Real Salt Lake to run down.

However, he has opted to cut short his time with Wolves and try his luck at the City Ground instead.

Forest boss Billy Davies has made no secret of his desire to bolster his attacking ranks in January and feels a man who faced England at the 2010 World Cup boasts the required pedigree.

Findley's decision has come as something of a surprise to McCarthy, as he was yet to take a proper look at the pacey frontman, but he accepts that the 25-year-old has gone where he feels he has the best chance of landing a deal.

"We had him here, he came and trained with us, got two or three days, but he's gone to Nottingham Forest," the Wolves manager told the Express and Star.

"We brought him over but he was injured when he came so we gave him treatment and then he went to Nottingham Forest, so we'll never know.

"I think he's been offered a contract, whereas we wanted to have a look at him."

Despite missing out on Findley, McCarthy is still looking to add in the January transfer window, with a centre-back top of his New Year wish list.

Reports have suggested that Middlesbrough's David Wheater could be one of those under consideration, but McCarthy is giving little away when it comes to possible targets.

When asked whether Wheater was an option, he shrugged: "I'm sure we'll be linked with lots of players."
