Mario Balotelli has stoked the derby flames ahead of next month's Old Trafford clash by claiming Wayne Rooney is not the best striker in Manchester.

The City star is a big admirer of Rooney and has named his United team-mate Nemanja Vidic as the best defender in the Premier League.

But with City having swooped for Edin Dzeko this month, Balotelli believes the ambitious Blues now have the world's best strikeforce in himself, Dzeko and former United striker Carlos Tevez.

"He (Rooney) is a very good player but not the best in Manchester," Balotelli told Italian newspaper Extra Time.

Conviction

"Our attack of Balotelli-Tevez-Dzeko is the best in the world - better even than Barcelona and Real Madrid. We are the strongest and we can win things now - we just lack conviction."

City are leading the chase of United in the Premier League title race and the derby rivals go head-to-head at Old Trafford on 12th February.

Balotelli was expected to be out until then after suffering a recurrence of his knee problem, which has sidelined him since scoring a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa on 28th December.

But the 20-year-old has now allayed fears he would require more surgery and he could return to action sooner than expected.

The Italy international's comments are sure to anger United fans but he claims he has only felt goodwill from City's derby rivals.

"Do United fans insult me? No, they stop me in the street and say: 'Mario, come to us'," Balotelli added.

"But I dream of beating them because I know how much the City fans care, they are wonderful with me. When they sang my name after the hat-trick, I had chills."

Carl Hooper (Manchester United fan) says...

For all you Citeh raving about Tevez, over the last three seasons Darren Bent has scored more goals than him, with only Rooney and Drogba scoring more. Best in the league? Best at Citeh certainly, but don't get ahead of yourselves. He didn't fit in here so we offloaded him and we're STILL top of the pile and haven't lost this season. And who is this Balotelli kid anyway? Never heard of him.

Ian Sagstetter (Leeds United fan) says...

Balotelli is a good player, but he needs to shut his mouth. Rooney is far better and is just off the pace at the moment. Its hard to live up to the season he had last year.

Karl Bowman (Arsenal fan) says...

OMG! Does he ever shut up, two weeks ago he claimed only Messi was better than him and now this, your not even that good, Rooney is 10 times the player you are and all those city fans that keep bringing up Roony's contract dispute need to take a look at Tevez, and Balotelli has already stated that he wants to play for A.C Milan so how loyal are your players???

Brian Morris (Blackburn Rovers fan) says...

Is Mario Balotelli trying to take over from El Hadji Diouf as premier league's most disliked player. With his awful attitude on the pitch, and now his big mouth working overtime he is well on his way to being a serious contender

Ian Gee (Wigan Athletic fan) says...

Listen, who does this guy really think he is at all? He has never won anything major in his life, he is 21, and has an attitude problem the likes I have never seen before. Im not the niggest fan of Man Utd OR Wayne Rooney but lets face it, they are by far the better of the two manchester sides. When City start winning things (with the 500m quid they have spent in 3 years) and building a legacy rather than building a 'Daily Star Dream Team', then they can come back and say they are the best but for now.....shut up Balotelli, im sick of hearing you bang on about how good you are, when clearly your not!!!

Kailash G (Manchester United fan) says...

All talk and no substance makes Mario a sorry joke. First apparently only Messi is better than him, then Mourinho needs to learn respect (look in the mirror), then disrespects City by saying he will leave for Milan in 2 years. Talk about blowing your own trumpet, this guys is playing an entire band on his own. Empty vessels make the most noise. Noisy neighbour indeed.

"Our attack of Balotelli-Tevez-Dzeko is the best in the world - better even than Barcelona and Real Madrid. We are the strongest and we can win things now - we just lack conviction." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH..... Besides Tevez, your whole team lacks conviction. Lack of Conviction = Not the best in the world... Keep playing fifa or even Better... Play Super Mario, im sure you'll have tons of conviction there. WHEN city win the league............................... Oops sorry its time to switch the playstation off

Ahh, isn't it nice to have cooments here from liverpool fans? Errol Brathwaite, that means you pal. So as you have no chance of winning anything you've decided to support citeh now?? Good on ya, nice to see the small club mentality arriving in liverpool. Oh, and Balotelli, shut up until you win something.

You know, for once, I agree with the arrogant, self centred, egotistical, conceited City forward. Rooney isn't the best striker in Manchester at the moment, it's Berbatov!!
