Manchester City winger Adam Johnson expects their title rivals to drop points in the Premier League race as the pressure mounts.

Roberto Mancini's troops have impressed this season and find themselves with a chance to finishing as English champions for the first time since 1968.

City have spent big in recent seasons and have one of the best squads in Europe and Johnson believes the team know they are on the cusp of something special.

The former Middlesbrough wide-man hopes they can maintain their winning run in the hope of piling the pressure on their rivals and ending their 35-year trophy drought.

"Every game we win it's a step closer," said Johnson. "Excitement is building and all the lads can feel it.

"We just want games to keep coming. Hopefully it will lead to us winning one of the cups or the league.

"I'm sure teams are going to slip up. We've still got to go to Old Trafford and United still have some tough games as well.

"Some of our football is a different class and it all seems to be clicking for us. We're getting better each game."

The harmony and camaraderie in City's squad is constantly questioned due to the huge personalities in Mancini's squad, but Johnson believes everyone is on the same page.

However, their inability to keep things tight at the back is a worry with Wolves recently scoring three times at Eastlands while Leicester scored twice in the midweek FA Cup replay.

"I think we are starting to click. We can't seem to keep clean sheets but the main thing is we're winning," Johnson said.

"If we win 4-3 every game I don't think the fans will mind too much.

"We're improving week in, week out but I'm sure there's a lot more to come.

"Some of the football is different class and it all seems to be clicking for us. We're getting better each game.

"It's great. I was out of the team a little bit earlier in the season but I think it was to do with the size of the squad.

"There's a lot of competition for places here. I'm glad to be back in the team and I just hope I can get a few more goals and a few more assists as well."
