Alan Pardew has revealed Newcastle midfielder Alan Smith could be out of action for up to two months.

The 30-year-old injured his ankle during the first half of Newcastle's 1-1 Wear-Tyne derby draw at Sunderland on Sunday, leaving the Stadium of Light on crutches.

Veteran midfielder Smith travelled to London on Wednesday for a series of scans, the results of which should be available on Thursday.

He is thought to have suffered damage to his ankle ligaments, a prognosis that could see him spend a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

Manager Pardew is preparing himself for bad news over the former Manchester United man.

He told the Northern Echo: "We'll have to wait and see, but it looks like he could be out for six to eight weeks."

Smith's absence strikes another blow for the Magpies ahead of their visit of Tottenham at the weekend, with star forward Andy Carroll already ruled out due to a thigh problem.
