Gabriel Obertan has vowed to show the Newcastle supporters what he is capable of after securing a move from Manchester United.

The French winger joined the Magpies on a five-year contract on Tuesday, bringing an end to a frustrating spell at Old Trafford.

Having made the switch to United in 2009, Obertan found it difficult to break into Sir Alex Ferguson's first team on a regular basis and scored just one goal for the club.

Alan Pardew has nevertheless seen enough potential to believe he can flourish in the Premier League, and the 22-year-old is determined to repay that faith and make an impact at St James' Park.

"I spent two enjoyable years at United," he said.

"Normally you are not happy to leave such a big club but I am not so sad because I have joined another big club with a lot of history."

Obertan added: "There were a lot of very good players at Manchester United and it is difficult when you are not playing as much as you want.

"Now I want to show Newcastle fans exactly what I can do. I have a point to prove and I just want to give 100 per cent."
