Last updated: 17th March 2008

With Grand Slam Sunday almost upon us we look at some great games featuring two of the capital's big guns.

Arsenal 3 Chelsea 3 - 4th September 1996

This sees the two rivals play out a real rollercoaster of an encounter, with Chelsea netting a last-gasp equaliser. The Blues went in front when Frank Leboeuf drilled home a penalty after Steve Bould had felled Dennis Wise in the box. They then doubled their lead when Gianluca Vialli's shot squirmed under John Lukic. Arsenal rallied though, and hit back through Paul Merson and Martin Keown. A sensational comeback then looked on the cards when Ian Wright made it 3-2 with 13 minutes remaining. However, in the dying minutes Wise lashed the ball gleefully home.

Chelsea 2 Arsenal 3 - 21st September 1997

A late success for Arsenal sees Nigel Winterburn hit the strike of his career. In a topsy-turvy game, the teams were square at 2-2. But with just seconds remaining, Winterburn powered forward from left-back to unleash an unstoppable and vicious shot into the top corner.

Arsenal 0 Chelsea 5 - 11th November 1998

The Blues completely annihilated Arsenal in this fourth round League Cup tie, as Chelsea turned on the style to leave The Gunners with not a prayer. Arsene Wenger did rest a few of his key personnel, but that meant little to the Chelsea supporters who witnessed a sumptuous 5-0 drubbing over their rivals. Frank Leboeuf, Gianluca Vialli (two) and Gustavo Poyet (two) were all on target in the emphatic triumph.

Chelsea 2 Arsenal 3 - 23rd October 1999

An emphatic encounter at Stamford Bridge, which will always be remembered for Nwankwo Kanu's stunning hat-trick. After taking a two-goal lead through Tore Andre Flo and Dan Petrescu, things looked be going according to plan for the home side. However, three goals in the last 15 minutes secured a dramatic comeback for The Gunners. The winner oozed class when the Nigerian rounded the onrushing Ed de Goey to bend home from a tight angle.

Arsenal 2 Chelsea 0 - 4th May 2002

The Gunners lifted the FA Cup courtesy of two glorious strikes from (it's only) Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg. With the score tied on 70 minutes, Parlour surged into the Chelsea half before opening up his body to belt a potent effort into the top corner. Just 10 minutes later, Ljungberg wrapped up the victory with a fabulous curling effort.

Arsenal 2 Chelsea 2 - 8th March 2003

Chelsea dug in to earn an FA Cup quarter-final replay as they secured a 2-2 draw at Highbury. John Terry had put the away side ahead before Francis Jeffers, and a wonderful Thierry Henry pirouette put The Gunners in front. But with eight minutes remaining Frank Lampard touched home to send the travelling fans into raptures.

Arsenal 2 Chelsea 1 - 15th February 2004

Jose Antonio Reyes' Arsenal career burst into life in this FA Cup fifth round tie. The Gunners came from a goal behind, with the £10.5million signing from Sevilla scoring a cracking brace. The first of which was an absolute screamer from the edge of the area, while the second came after a clever run in which he slotted home to send Highbury delirious.

Arsenal 1 Chelsea 2 - 6th April 2004

Wayne Bridge broke Arsenal hearts in this UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg. Chelsea were held to 1-1 stalemate in the first leg, and knew they had to score in the encounter at Highbury. Things looked to be going Arsenal's way when Reyes put the them ahead before the break. However, five minutes into the second half Chelsea responded through Frank Lampard. With the game delicately poised, Wayne Bridge emerged as the unlikely hero as he burst into the box to fire past Jens Lehmann - sending the pocket of Chelsea fans completely ballistic.

Arsenal 2 Chelsea 2 - 12th December 2004

A fantastic game at Highbury saw Arsenal and Chelsea play out an action-packed 2-2 draw. The Gunners broke the deadlock after just 75 seconds when Thierry Henry skilfully slotted home. Jose Mourinho's men responded though, with John Terry powerfully heading them level. Arsenal's second was steeped in controversy as Henry took a quick free-kick, catching Petr Cech completely unaware. Chelsea continued to fight, and they clawed one back through Eidur Gudjohnsen. Henry then had a golden chance to complete his hat-trick and steal a victory for Arsenal, but he ballooned over from just six yards.

Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1 - 25th February 2007

Last season's League Cup final was an absorbing fixture, which saw Arsenal's youngsters' pit their wits against the experience of Chelsea. The clash erupted on 12 minutes when Theo Walcott finished expertly; however The Gunners were soon pegged back when Didier Drogba coolly levelled. John Terry was then sent crumbling to the floor after catching Abou Diaby's boot in the face, before Drogba rose brilliantly to head in the winner with six minutes remaining. The drama continued to unfold, and a scuffle broke out in the dying minutes. Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger entered the fray in an attempt to cool matters, but John Mikel Obi, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor were all dismissed.

Who could forget Jose's "Chin Up" signal to the fans at the Emirates last season? We may have lost the title in that game but I almost cried with pride at our 'Never Say Die' attitutde ...and I DID CRY WITH JOY when we won the Champions League Quarter Final when Wayne Bridge scored...good thing I didn't have a girlfriend at the time ...she would have thought I was mad!

Chelsea haven't shown anything special against the big premiership guns under Grant, the Chelsea strikers are far from beating any scoring records this season, but Chelsea know what it would mean to win, they are crawling back into contention and their mid fielder's are on form, Chelsea 2-1

The one all draw of 06/07 with Essien scoring in injury time would be up there. Rarely does and equaliser make you feel like you've taken all the points.
