Alan Smith admits Newcastle United were always going to be his next club once he had spoken to Sam Allardyce.

The England international was wanted by the likes of Everton, Middlesbrough and Sunderland upon realising his Manchester United chances would be limited this season.

And, speaking after completing a £6million move to St James' Park, Smith outlined his admiration for Allardyce's qualities.

"I spoke to a lot of managers, I made no hiding of that," said Smith on Sky Sports News.

"Once I had spoken to the gaffer (Allardyce) about his plans - he's well-renowned for being very well prepared in terms of his backroom staff, how he wants people to play, that's very clear.

"Once I had spoken to him, I think that really made my decision.

No opportunity

"He will give you the best opportunity to do as well as possible. He knows what makes people tick, he knows what the fans want to see and he knows how to get the best out of players."

During three years at Old Trafford, Smith struggled to establish himself, and though a serious leg injury sidelined him for the best part of 12 months, the striker does not feel he had a chance to prove his credentials with the champions.

He added: "I don't think I had the opportunity at Man Utd.

"I think there were times when I played well, and I was left out of the team as well, which at a massive club like that you know is going to happen.

"I decided that, if you are going to stay at a club and fight for your place, the thing you need to have is the opportunity to do that.

"I felt it has been limited, and it would be limited this year, so it was a big decision and one now I've done and I'm looking forward to the new challenge."
