Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has offered his services to the Football Association as they look for Steve McClaren's successor.

The FA are currently searching for a new coach after dismissing McClaren over England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

A number of candidates have ruled themselves out of the running for the job, including the likes of Martin O'Neill and Alan Curbishley, while Louis van Gaal is keen on the job.

With England still reeling over missing out on Switzerland and Austria next summer, Ferguson has confirmed he would be happy to liaise with The FA regarding McClaren's replacement.

"Obviously, I will try to help the situation," stated Ferguson. "A lot of people want to do that because it is important to our game that England get the right man.

"It is not easy to get international managers. It is not an easy job and it is not an easy selection process.

"No-one at the FA has spoken to me and I don't know if they will or not but there is nothing wrong with them asking football people."

Although numerous names including Jose Mourinho have been linked with the post, Ferguson is not willing to add to the debate until candidates have declared their interest in the job.

"First of all, it is about who wants the job and then who has the qualifications for it," he continued.

"Obviously, if Jose wanted it, he would be a consideration.

"But if Arsene Wenger said he was interested, he would be a consideration. If I said I was interested, I would be a consideration."
