Watkins hails double-winning season

Manchester United director Maurice Watkins has hailed the club's double-winning campaign as a fantastic achievement.

The Red Devils backed up their Premier League success on Wednesday night when they landed the UEFA Champions League trophy following a 6-5 penalty shoot-out win over rivals Chelsea.

Although United are now champions of Europe for the second time in nine years Watkins does not believe anything has been taken away from their success in Moscow.

"It means a great deal," Watkins told Sky Sports News. "It's a fantastic achievement.

"I think when we started off the season I don't think we were necessarily thinking we were going to win the Premier League and Champions League this season.

"We've brought all these young players this on season and it's been wonderful. The one thing that's been emphasised all along is this team spirit."

Longevity

With another season of the way the question has been asked how long can United's long-serving manager Sir Alex Ferguson carry on in the job.

Watkins does not believe the 66-year-old is showing any sign slowing down and with two more trophies in the cabinet still has what it takes to be successful.

"I think he's doing okay isn't he. He tried to try to retire a few years ago and then changed his mind about that," he continued.

"He seems full of energy. We've got two Premierships on the trot and a Champions League as well, so not bad."
