Bernd Schuster has said that Real Madrid are 'working hard' to draw a line under their pursuit of Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant Ronaldo will remain at Old Trafford for the new season, despite the Portugal international failing to clearly indicate where he sees his future.

Real are reportedly poised to offer a record-breaking fee for the 23-year-old should he express his desire to secure a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

Head coach Schuster admits the club expected a tough battle in landing Ronaldo, but are hopeful of soon reaching a resolution following a drawn-out transfer saga.

"I think the club is working hard to get a solution to this matter. We will have to see," Schuster said after his side's 2-1 win over Hamburg in the Emirates Cup.

Robinho

"We knew it would be a complicated matter. It was not going to be easy for Cristiano Ronaldo to come to Real Madrid.

"He would be a great player for any coach. Of course if you ask any coach in the world if they want Cristiano Ronaldo they would say yes."

The capture of Ronaldo would reportedly set in motion an exit for Robinho to Chelsea, however Schuster insists Real have no plans to sell the Brazilian.

"A lot of teams are interested in buying him but I think he knows he is a very important player in our project," Schuster said.

"He is fundamental in our team and we have never thought about letting him go."
