Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he is not desperate to add to his squad before the transfer window closes.

The United boss hinted earlier in the summer that he would be happy to bring in just one top-quality player.

However, he has found that difficult so far and it now seems he may start the new season with the same squad that won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford but Ferguson insists he would not be worried if there were no new arrivals.

"We might well start 2008-09 with largely the squad we had last season - and after all, they didn't do too badly," he said.

"We have not brought in the kind of top-quality player everyone seems to be expecting.

"We are still researching and looking but it is not easy and certainly we are not desperate."

Balance

Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo will both miss the start of the season due to illness and injury respectively, while Nani is suspended for the Premier League opener against Newcastle and Anderson is at the Olympic Games with Brazil.

However, Ferguson is confident that a number of his younger players will continue to develop and put pressure on the more established individuals.

Ferguson said: "We have the right balance of youth and experience thanks to the work we did in the transfer market the previous year.

"In terms of numbers we have been boosted by the return from loan of several young players who have the potential to go all the way.

"So I think we already have the men for the job."
