Dutchman Rene Meulensteen is confident he can be a success following his promotion to first-team coach at Manchester United.

With Mike Phelan moving up to replace Carlos Queiroz as Sir Alex Ferguson's number two at Old Trafford - the Scot again looked to within to promote Meulensteen.

Meulensteen - who was technical skills development coach - feels his elevation will help the stabilisation and continuity needed at the club.

"Part of the success at Manchester United over the years is related to the stability and continuity at the club which the manager brings himself," he told the club's website.

"I think Sir Alex had a good look to see how the partnership with myself would work and whether it would be a good idea.

"When things start to kick in with the league with games etc, I think he saw enough to decide not to bring anyone else in.

"We must realise the good things that Carlos has put in place here. We need to carry that on but maybe put our own identity on to things to ensure we keep progressing as a club."
