Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney have both been ruled out of England's friendly with Germany in Berlin next week.

Ferdinand has a back injury while Rooney is struggling with a calf problem.

Neither player featured in Manchester United's 5-0 win over Stoke.

Darren Fletcher has also been withdrawn from Scotland's high-profile encounter with Argentina - a match you can see live on Sky Sports 1 on Wednesday.

As ever, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be sweating on the fitness of key players during international week with Brazil's encounter with Portugal in Brasilia a particular concern.

"We will have Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson going over there, so God knows what time they will get back," Ferguson said. "It is not an easy trip that's for sure."
