Scanlow: Busby Babe
Former Busby Babe Albert Scanlon has died at the age of 74, Manchester United have confirmed.
Scanlon had been suffering from ill health for some time, having been admitted to hospital in October with kidney problems and pneumonia, and sadly passed away on Tuesday.
The outside forward came through the ranks at Old Trafford and made his debut in 1954, at the tender age of 19.
Scanlon was a survivor of the Munich air crash in 1958 in which eight of his team-mates and three club officials lost their lives.
Scanlon went on to recover from the broken leg and fractured skull he suffered as a result of the crash to go on and score 16 goals that season.
The former Newcastle man eventually left United in 1960 before spells with the Magpies, Lincoln, Mansfield and Newport County.
A club statement read: "Everyone at Manchester United sends deepest condolences to Albert's family and friends."
Meanwhile United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website: "I have known Albert since I came to Manchester United and he was always a pleasant and delightful man.
"He was always cheery and never lost his sense of humour despite the experience he had, and to come through that shows his strength of character.
"He will be a great loss, as he was a popular man, and our condolences go to his family."
