Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov hailed strike partner Wayne Rooney as "unstoppable" following the front man's inspired display in the 3-1 win over Hull at the KC Stadium.

Rooney set United on their way at a crucial time, converting Darren Fletcher's cross on the stroke of half-time after the Tigers had the better of the first half.

The 24-year-old then went from hero to villain as he inexplicably played a poor pass back to keeper Tomasz Kuszczak, which eventually led to Craig Fagan equalising from the penalty spot.

Rooney recovered to lead his side to a vital three points though, first putting in the cross that Andy Dawson put through his own net, before picking out Berbatov at the back post with a superb pass through the legs of Hull defender Anthony Gardner to complete the win.

Berbatov was full of praise for his team-mate, and applauded the assist that led to his fifth goal of the season.

He told MUTV: "Wayne did fantastic for us - we were joking in the dressing room that he had three assists to his name!

"He bounced back after their goal and made both the second and third ones which was great.

Great position

"If he can keep playing the way we know he can then I don't think anyone can stop him. He's still young and the future is ahead of him."

United's victory reduced the gap between themselves and leaders Chelsea to two points after the Blues dropped more points in their 0-0 draw with Birmingham.

And Berbatov believes his side can regain top spot from Carlo Ancelotti's men to claim a fourth successive title.

"I think we are in a great position," he added. "There are still a lot of games to go and it will be difficult, but in the end I think we'll end on top.

"We've had a difficult time with injuries, but we still have a great squad and players are starting to come back and we will go on a winning run now.

"The boss knows what to do in terms of changing things when he needs to and I'm sure we'll finish on top at the end of the season."
