Wayne Rooney, for me, has done more (than Didier Drogba) because he's had such a tough job. He's carred a lot more on his own this season.

Tony Cascarino believes Wayne Rooney is the best in the Premier League - even after watching Didier Drogba destroy Arsenal.

The Chelsea striker took his tally to 12 goals in 12 games with a double against the Gunners that put Carlo Ancelotti's side back on top of the Premier League.

Drogba's display came just 24 hours after Wayne Rooney had taken his season's haul to 21 league goals in Manchester United's five-goal pummelling of Portsmouth.

And former Chelsea frontman Cascarino believes that the England striker has the edge over the Ivory Coast international and Liverpool's injured Fernando Torres as the very best in the Premier League.

"I think Rooney has been fantastic all year," he told Sky Sports News.

"I think he's played a far more difficult role. (Dimitar) Berbatov has been in and out, (Michael) Owen has played a bit-part and Rooney has taken on the mantle of losing (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Carlos) Tevez on his own.

"Chelsea do have a lot of good squad players - very, very good squad players. Nicolas Anelka has been exceptional for them this year, Florent Malouda has improved and there are a lot of plusses to help and assist Drogba.

"But Rooney, for me, has done more because he's had such a tough job. He's carred a lot more on his own this season."

Cascarino, who scored eight goals in 40 games for the Blues, still has his doubts about Drogba.

He admits he can be 'unplayable' on his day but remains unconvinced that the Ivorian has the temperament to carry Chelsea's hopes when it really matters.

"He's up there with Rooney and Torres when he's at his best; they're the best in English football.

"But the only problem I have with Didier Drogba is sometimes, when he gets to the stage where he has been brilliant for some time, what happens is he can let it go and let his standards fall in a one-off game when he thinks the game is all about him.

"Chelsea fans will remember that Champions League final when his ego got the better of him and he got sent off. A lot of Chelsea fans are going to look at Drogba and wonder when it really comes to crunch time, is he still going to be able to do it?

"He's well capable, but there will still be some eyebrows raised at Chelsea if he can keep this level up week in, week out."
