Didier Drogba has fired a warning shot at title race rival Wayne Rooney by saying he will score more goals than the Manchester United ace this season.

The Premier League title race took another unexpected turn once more as Chelsea lost to Everton in midweek, leaving them one point in front of the Red Devils who picked up a draw at Villa Park.

But the Ivory Coast striker believes there is another battle taking place as he trails one goal behind Rooney's impressive total of 23 goals so far this campaign which Drogba is eager to beat.

"I want to be the top scorer in England. I want to make sure people remember 'Drogba the Warrior' in this campaign," the 31-year-old told The Sun ahead of Chelsea's FA Cup tie against Cardiff City.

"My absence at the African Nations Cup could end up being decisive. It gave an advantage to Wayne and my other rivals. But I warn them I shall be fighting until the very last match."

Tottenham's Jermain Defoe is next in the scoring chart with 20 goals, followed by Manchester City's Carlos Tevez with 18 and Sunderland's Darren Bent who has bagged 15.

Pulse racing

But it is the shoot-out with Rooney that has really set the former Marseille striker's pulse racing.

"The race between myself and Rooney will be beautiful and it's my objective to arrive at the finishing post first. I don't think about the exact number of goals I shall need. But it will be necessary for me to pass 30 if I am to be the No.1 - and this is possible," he said.

"Rooney is a big forward and playing at a really high level. But there are still many matches to go and I intend to soar above him in the goal stakes.

"It seems I'm always fighting against Manchester United players in this respect. Cristiano Ronaldo was not 100 per cent a striker but scored from a lot of free-kicks and penalties and they gave him many goals.

"Wayne is different to him but always scores and there is so much merit in his play."

Club manager Carlo Ancelotti also believes his main forward is the man to beat in the goal stakes despite praising Rooney's versatility.

"Rooney the best striker in the world? He is the best striker of United," the Italian told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He (Rooney) is a champion, a world-class goalscorer and also an ideal team-mate. He can play anywhere. But I have Drogba."
