Manchester United captain Gary Neville has ended any doubts about his future by signing a new one-year contract at Old Trafford.

Neville's deal was due to expire in the summer and there had been suggestions that the 35-year-old was considering going into retirement.

However, after establishing himself as United's first-choice right-back again during the second half of the season, Neville has committed to playing on for another 12 months.

He is one of the club's most decorated players after winning numerous major trophies since making his debut as a teenager against Torpedo Moscow in the Uefa Cup in 1992.

The Red Devils skipper is fifth on the club's all-time appearance list and he is close to clocking up 600 first-team games for the reigning Premier League champions.

Fantastic contribution

The long-serving defender follows fellow veterans Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in agreeing to stay on for another year with Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

"His contribution to the club has been fantastic," Ferguson said.

"As I have said time and time again certain players make careers out of their determination and will to do it and I think Gary is one of those players and we are really pleased with that."

His form in recent months has also led to a clamour for Neville to be included in Fabio Capello's England squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa as cover for Glen Johnson.

Neville has won 85 caps for the national team since his debut against Japan in 1995, but has yet to play under Capello, with his last England appearance coming against Spain over three years ago.

i think its fantastic to know that come next season we'll still have our most experienced and decorated players. Experience and youth go hand in hand, without both, winning the league title will be even more difficult than it already is. Happy bithday to John O'shea, Viva forever.

A much desreved year extension for a complete professional spanning many years of commitment and achivement to one club, along with Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. Players that have only ever played for one club and won every club competition with that club. I can't think of any better example to set young, upcomping footballers. Well done Gary Neville, much deserved and respected.

Good news for united! I think having Neville on for one year will help bring through Rafael to establish as first choice right back.
