Gill: Cautious approach
David Gill admits Manchester United's approach to transfers has changed in the wake of new legislation.
Premier League regulations now stipulate that each club in the top flight can only work with a 25-man squad, of which eight members must be 'home-grown'.
Pressure is now on clubs to unearth British talent, rather than continuously dip into the foreign market.
As a result, summer dealings have died down, with more thought having to be given to the pursuit of potential new recruits.
Many clubs are also looking to tighten their purse strings, meaning less movement and fewer high-profile deals.
Chief executive Gill accepts that United, who have been very quiet this summer, must follow suit, but believes there could be more action before the window slams shut.
"With the World Cup being on not a lot went on in June, but I think there will be more movement in August as clubs look at their squads, and I think there will be some trimming because of the squad limits being introduced in the Premier League," he told United's official website.
"We have to name at least eight 'home-grown' players in a squad of 25 by 1st September. It's something we need to consider from now on when we're looking at new players to see how they will affect the squad balance."
Gill has also sought to play down reports that he recently returned to Manchester midway through United's pre-season tour of North America in order to wrap up another signing.
He added: "I have no idea where that came from! I can confirm I didn't fly back though.
"As I've said before we're always looking at things and I'm not saying we won't do any business before the transfer window closes, but at the moment there's nothing imminent."

How convenient for David Gill and the rest of the United hierachy that this new rule has been instigated - now they can blame lack of signings on the Premier League, and not the fact that as we all know....Manchester United are skint !!!

Now, let''s sit back, relax and wait for the response from the doom merchants, anti-Glazer fans, those wanting £100 million signings and the arm-chair idiots who genuinely believe they know football and how to run Manchester United better than the manager.

Come on Gill get the cheque book out you can''t seriously expect to compete with chelsea and city this season with the squad that we have, A blind man can see that we are seriously short across midfield with carrick and anderson not up to it and unfortunately scholes and giggs coming towards the end of there careers. Again i ask where''s the money that we got from ronaldo gone?

This is not a rule that really affects united We have enough home grown players, clearly we don''t av the funds! We need a right back, attacking and defensive midfielder! Ozil is the man for man utd as sneijder is a no go! Can''t rely on Higgs and scholes all season! Unfortunately I think Hargreaves may not return, much better than carrick n anderson but if he keeps gettin injured we need to full his role! Either diarra from real wud b much better than yaya toure! Really disappointing summer of transfers for united! If homegrown players was a new philosophy what happened to joe cole? Well done Liverpool great signing!

C''mon fergie please listen to us fans, just two signings mesut ozil as a creative midfielder , something we been lacking and a class finisher saurez, i know we have rooney (world class), berbatov (needs to be sold), owen( injury prone), macheda ( living on a wonder goal) welbeck (to be loaned), diouf ( not living upto expectations) and chico ( unproven) but we need saurez as he can finish.

Surely now they have to introduce the B teams or reserve teams in to the football league. This has always been a good idea anyway but now it is even better with this rule change. Clubs are not going to want to loan out their young player in case the get injuries and have no cover in their 25 man squad so the only way they will get decent competitive games is if the reserve teams get put into the football league. Look at how Spain have developed young players and a big reason for that is that those young players get to play in a real league against grown men so they find it easier to adjust to the highest level.

I dont understand how does the fact that we need to have 8 home grown players in the squad change anything? Simply admit there isnt a lotta money to spend. period!

Typical United - getting their excuses in now - They can''t compete so they try a different spin. They will come back with accusations that City have bought success - but who doesn''t? The richest clubs buy the best players and win things.

I genuinely think our first team squad is nearly there however we need couple of additions...we need to find a succesor to van der sar for next season! our defence is good but maybe right back is a problem which rafael will solve in the future! our strikeforce is really good and full of potential as wayne can be partnerned by any of the promising youngsters like hernandez, macheda, welbeck and diouf as well as berba and owen! but in midfield we have a serious problem. we need to two players in the mould of scholes and keane...we need a midfield dominator like keane maybe Annan and specialy creative player like modric, ozil etc. And the natural succesor to ronaldo is Alexis sanchez. so we really are not that far of from a great team. In FERGIE I TRUST!!!
