Sir Alex Ferguson admits he is still trying to encourage Paul Scholes to prolong his Manchester United career for another season.

Scholes has been offered a one-year extension at Old Trafford, but the 36-year-old recently confirmed he will make a decision at the end of the season regarding his future.

Reports have suggested the former England international will opt for retirement, but Ferguson is not giving up on persuading the midfielder to carry on.

"I've had a few chats with Scholesy to encourage him to stay but we will see," said Ferguson.

Fellow veteran Ryan Giggs has already accepted a 12-month extension and Ferguson sees no reason why the 37-year-old can not play on into his 40s.

Unbelievable

The United boss added: "As for Ryan, he has been unbelievable, fantastic.

"He is 37 years of age and still looks as if he has got four or five years left in him.

"But it's difficult to say, because when you get older it can sometimes hit you quickly. What Ryan is doing at the moment is quite amazing and he has never had weight problems."

With United chasing a Premier League and UEFA Champions League double, Ferguson is happy with the strength of his squad as the campaign builds towards its climax.

He continued: "We have got the experience to handle it. You have to trust your squad and everyone is relishing getting their chance.

"Just look at young Fabio, who for a year has played second fiddle to his twin Rafael, but is now in the team and it is difficult to leave him out.

"Team selection is becoming more difficult."
