Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has revealed he has been questioning his decision to go into retirement.

Van der Sar is planning to quit playing at the end of the season despite appearing to be as good as ever between the posts for United this term.

The 40-year-old acknowledged he is still fit enough to play at the highest level, but is keen to spend more time with his family.

Reports have claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson will try to tempt the Dutchman to play on for another season as the United boss continues to search for Van der Sar's long-term successor.

"Physically, I don't need to stop. I'm still as fit as a fiddle, although nobody can carry on playing forever."

However, while admitting he has questioned his impending retirement, Van der Sar believes he is making the right choice in calling it a day.

Fit as a fiddle

"I do ask myself sometimes why I'm retiring," Van der Sar told the News of the World. "A lot of people have spoken to me about precisely this question.

"Physically, I don't need to stop. I'm still as fit as a fiddle, although nobody can carry on playing forever.

"Now that I've passed 40, I feel quite simply that this is the best time to stop.

"This is a decision I have not made on my own. I also consulted my wife Annemarie and my manager Alex Ferguson."
