Claudio Pizarro admits he was prepared to fight for his place at Chelsea before being offered a return to Werder Bremen.

The Peruvian striker completed a season-long switch to Bremen last week, having played for the German club between 1999 and 2001.

He had joined Chelsea last summer, but scored just twice for the club and had been linked with Hull City and Stoke City.

However, until Bremen came in with an offer, Pizarro revealed he was willing to stay at Stamford Bridge this season.

"I wanted to fight (for a place at Chelsea), but then Klaus (Allofs, Bremen director of sport) came and told me all about Bremen," he said.

"A lot has changed and I think Werder have improved in a lot of areas and the team has a lot of quality.

"I want to win things and that is why I am here."

Pizarro concedes that his Chelsea career floundered after Jose Mourinho left as manager to be replaced by Avram Grant.

He added: "It was okay, I mean I still had some positive experiences, but it certainly did not turn out the way I had imagined.

"One of the best coaches in the world wanted to have me in his team, but then three months later he was gone.

"That is just my bad luck, but such is football."
