Fabio Capello is expected to make a decision on John Terry's captaincy of the England team well in advance of their next match.

It is understood the Italian, who returns to duties following knee surgery by attending the Euro 2012 qualifying draw in Warsaw next Sunday, will give his verdict on the 29-year-old Chelsea defender ahead of the friendly against Egypt on March 3.

In the meantime, the Football Association will refrain from commenting on the Terry situation despite the growing pressure on the England captain following more allegations about his private life.

The FA remain happy for Capello to have the final say on Terry's suitability as captain.

Former England captain Alan Shearer described Terry as a "fantastic leader".

He said: "We do not know all the facts, so it would be wrong to suggest anything. What I do know is that John Terry is a fantastic leader and a very good footballer.

"I do not know him him as a person - I have just played against him. Only John Terry and Fabio Capello will be able to tell in the coming weeks if it (the allegations) affects the captaincy."

Stony-faced

Terry scored the winning goal for Chelsea on Saturday but the defender remained stony-faced amid claims that he had an affair with the ex-partner of his former team-mate Wayne Bridge.

Terry, who refused to comment on the allegations that he had cheated on wife Toni, did not smile as he was congratulated by team-mates after he headed Chelsea's second goal in a 2-1 win at Burnley.

The pressure on Terry has been exacerbated by extensive coverage in Sunday's newspapers about his alleged relationship with Vanessa Perroncel.

Bridge, 29, who has separated from Perroncel and now plays for Manchester City, said on Saturday in a statement that he did not intend to comment on the reports for the sake of the couple's son.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Terry will remain captain of the club.

"There is no discussion about this (the captaincy)," he said. "The players will never lose their trust in him."

Ancelotti added: "I do not want to talk about his personal life. He is doing his job very well, every day, every training session. For this (reason) I am not worried."

The club already pledged its support to Terry and his family but added that it was "a personal matter".

Ancelotti refused to discuss whether Terry should remain skipper of the national team.

"I am manager of Chelsea and that is my focus, not England," he said.

Bridge's statement, issued by his lawyer, said the press reports "deal with matters which are of a deeply personal and private nature".

"My primary concern is the welfare of my son. Therefore, I intend to make no comment whatsoever either now or in the future about these reports and ask that my privacy is respected."

I can' belive how much support for Terry to stay as England Captain is comming from supporters of other clubs. Of course there are those that will jump on the get rid of Terry bandwagon, but there always will be. The guy is a prize idiot - no question. But who would replace him as England Captain. Gerrard, no. Rio, no. Rooney possible but it might affect his game. Terry's actions are nothing to do with football. Keep him as Captain and focus on the World Cup.

What has John Terry done that David Beckham did not. He won't be the first and certainly won't be the last. Making someone resign from his captaincy for playing away from home is wrong. Yes, he has betrayed his wife and children and she should get shot of him now as he will only humiliate her further but his home life should not reflect on the pitch. I agree with Gino Trueman [Stoke fan]'s comments in as fact as Beckham nor Sven were ever pinalised for their yoyo boxer shorts - Give Terry a break

John Terry should be at the World Cup, but not as captain. There's no doubting his footballing ability. One of the best center backs in the world, but the England captaincy, the same as any other nation should stand for more than football. Being the captain of club or country makes you the role model for the team as well as the leader, kids wanting to get into football and follow teams should see a good example set. The message shouldn't be that you can earn all the money in the world, sleep with who you want, do what you want and still be given the captaincy like it means nothing When you read about Bobby Moore and his captaincy, for every positive they say about his football, it is always linked in with his personality and his grace off the pitch. Is John Terry the only footballer who does this? Of course not, he's just unlucky that the British press love to attack its own people to sell papers.

There is always the odd 1 or 2 feral supporters who have no idea what they are talking about, all other supporters seem to see the mature side of the event. The fact of the matter is he was born to lead Chelsea and England to success and he will move Heaven and Earth to make sure England win and show the England supporters that he is their greatest captain ever.

Oh come on - how many so called WAGS have been passed around footballers? When people hang round in the same circles lines will get crossed. Has anyone had a xmas do when someones boy/galfriend has done something with a colleague etc - should they be sacked for that? This has nothing to do with his ability on the pitch only his ability as a friend and a trustworthy person. Lets remember the papers are the biggest pimps in the world who hand over large amounts of cash to women who sleep with men. A pimp is that not?! What needs to be asked is will it really effect the team? if the players say yes then action is needed if not leave it be. Everyone in the world has affairs etc just because some people are in the public eye they need to be hung, drawn and quartered. To consenting adults - only problem is EX missus of a colleague and Terry's wife. But let say another footballer actually married Bridges wife would that be a problem as well? life goes on. deal with it

Ive read most of the comments and i thought id throw my opinion into the ring. What everyone is failing to realise is whether they want an england captain whos going to go after his team mates wife or girl friend during the world cup? Do they really want a captain who would stoop that low? Captain is supposed to lead by example...what sort of example is that going 2 set to the next generation. 'Oh the former captain cheated with his team mates wag and he got let off thats allrite then'...hell with england...strip him off chelseas captaincy. Your going 2 judge the captain not only by his football skill but also as a person and a leader. I know what your going 2 be thinkin when i say put ferdinand captain but ive always thought he was the right man for the job....terry's a good player but really overrated when compared with a carra or a vidic and ferdinand or even a richard dunne.... But then again...he might be let off and everyones thankful for that and if thats going 2 happen (which it most likely will) we should ask ourselves...whats happenin to this country when we can so easily forgive something like this.....

It will be a wrong decision by Capello to remove JT as England captain. Terry is a good leader and a fantastic player. The paper are glad they have things to write about, but this is only distracting the team, killing their spirit, and destroying Englands world cup dreams. This matter is private. It shouldnt be argued about. Allow him to settle his personal problems and get on with his career.

This is only the tip of the ice berg. They will all come out now. Terry is greedy with absolutely no moral fibre whatsoever. Everything he does is a sham, with the ultimate goal of making as much money as possible. He should had gone when he parked his Bentley in a disabled parking space. Only minor I know, but small things like that go to the very essence of what makes someone tick and how they treat their fellow human beings. I am sure some police offciers know what I mean, but willnever be able to comment.

I will never buy any sunday paper again or newspaper affiliated with the News of the world they are lower than a snakes belly in my eyes. Constantly sabotaging England's football aspirations, they don't represent anything this country stands for!

The first thing I thought when I read about JT's indiscretions was "What an ass!" - my feelings about him as a bloke took quite a nosedive. Should he be sacked or forced to resign as the England captain? I think his goal against Burnley answers that question - as my wife put it "He may be an idiot but obviously knows how to channel his anger/feelings postively when he is playing football" - he's your best leader at the moment and dumping him would be a grave mistake. One last thing - isn't it funny that most of the negative comments have come from Liverpool fans? You really are are a bunch of sad, mean-spirited plonkers - maybe your team is doing so badly because you give them the same vibes when they play.

What's wrong with this country. Are you telling me that the press couldn't have waited until after the World Cup to report something they already knew about. As for sacking Terry not for me, So a famous footy player has scores away so what, Bridges bird is to blame she should have back heeled him when he started making a play for her. And another thing did anyone ask David Beckham to resign or better still what about Sven and he was the Manager.

Jennifer Kinsley (Everton fan) says...

It's absolutely daft to be clamouring for his head over his rumpy-pumpies off-field. Do you gullible John Public actually believe he's the only footballer who dips his quill in someone else's ink? You've got to be really naive or just have it in you for John. He's a remarkably brave centre-back and a player who commands great respect from his fellow professionals. You only had to see how his team mates reacted to his goal, rallying around him, against Burnley. I don't think, bar Lampard, we have an able replacement. Obviously Lampard wouldn't want to replace his club captain and bosom mate. I'm sure, like Ancelotti, Capello will do the right thing and stick with him. These allegations are meant to be resolved behind closed doors or legally 'between Bridge, Terry and the concerned'.

JT is a fantastic captain for both England and Chelsea. I suggest that the press better not disgrace themselves by disgracing someone else. Such sore losers, anything for the sake of news ... I hope Terry's performance does not get affected by all this though I am sure he will see this through ..

John Terry's private life is his own buisness, his position as England skipper should be judged by his performace on the pitch. As usual the press have picked up on something that they don't have all the facts on and have decided to try and ruin a persons life and career.

An unsuccessful world cup campaign for England in 2010 will mean that the press are to be blamed. It is vital every player focuses on what they have to do, and that is not possible when the press are bombarding you with questions and speculations about your private life which eventually sabotage certain things with your family. How do they than expect the players to focus on their job on the pitch? its truly ridiculous...

Hats off to the fans of all the other clubs sticking up for JT, would of been all too easy for you to jump on the media band wagon and take a pop at our captain purely for him being a blue. To quote so many other quotes on here, england have had so many other stars with some issues personally but have still gone on the be great on the field, and let's face it Terry on the field has rarely been anything but immense!

Steve Goleski (Manchester United fan) says...

While JT may be an impressive footballer all you have to do is look at his track record to get your answer, in the last year his mom has been booked for shoplifting, his father for cocaine trafficking and himself for "private tours" of Chelsea facilities, add in the fact that hes a liar and a cheat for someone as close as one of his mates and former teammate with someone who is the mother of bridges child thats a rather large deal. As far as Chelsea is concerned they HAVE to keep him as their captain to save face for the club which their so called "captain" has defiled with his discrepancies. I say strip him of his England captaincy because i sure don't want him leading my team come world cup time
