Carlo Ancelotti has insisted he will not try to control the private lives of his Chelsea players and is only concerned about their performances on the pitch.

Wayne Rooney is the latest England star to hit the headlines for reasons other than football, with allegations about his off-field behaviour appearing in the newspapers over the weekend.

John Terry and Ashley Cole also found themselves in the media glare last season, with the former stripped of his England captaincy after reports of infidelity emerged.

However, Ancelotti maintains that he is not concerned about what his men get up to in their own time.

The Chelsea boss cannot understand why personal business comes under so much scrutiny and has praised Cole and Terry for the way they stayed focused on playing well amid all the stories.

Fantastic

"I have to control their behaviour on the training ground. I don't have to decide on their behaviour outside," Ancelotti said in The Sun.

"I am not a policeman. I am not interested if they go to sleep at eight o'clock or 12.

"I am interested if they can give me 100 per cent when they are training. It's possible to keep them separate.

"John Terry and Ashley Cole were fantastic examples of this last season. It is personal behaviour, personal to the character of the people. It is not my problem. I'm not interested.

"John and Ashley last season showed fantastic behaviour on the training ground. I am surprised there is so much interest in the private life of a player."

Mark Graham (Chelsea fan) says...

I think Carlo is talking sense here... We are in the midst of a sick culture of Big Brother-ness where the media is so invasive on peoples private lives, hell bent on humiliation and condemnation. The press love building someone up to messiah-like levels, only to smash them into the ground.
