Carlo Ancelotti has defended the character of his former player Gennaro Gattuso after his headbutt on Joe Jordan.
The AC Milan midfielder is in hot water with Uefa after his spat with the Tottenham coach following the Italian side's 1-0 UEFA Champions League defeat to Spurs on Tuesday night.
Former Milan boss Ancelotti, who managed Gattuso for eight years at the San Siro during which time the club won two European Cups, admits his fellow Italian has made a mistake but believes it was out of character.
The current Chelsea manager said: "I was obviously not happy because Gattuso is a very generous player, is a very good man.
"He made a mistake. I'm very disappointed with this.
"Also, he was very disappointed after the game. He said sorry and full stop.
"He's played 100 games in the Champions League and he never had problems.
"I have seen him always correct.
"He made a mistake, he said sorry and now Uefa obviously will take a decision.
"To judge Gattuso as a man because he made a mistake is not good.
"I can say it because I know him very well."
Uefa's control and disciplinary body will discuss the case against 33-year-old Gattuso on Monday, which could result in a lengthy ban.

Gattuso should be ban for life, that will deter other players from making such deliberate act tagged 'mistake' by Anceloti.

Gatusso went over twice to Joe. Joe did not leave the technical area. and he was man handeld. I remember Joe as a player and this will not affect him one bit. But Gattuso's action must not be tolerated I think Rio F got 8 months for missing a drugs test.

Mr Ancelotti is incorrect at this time. Gattuso is well known for his bad behavior with the officials and players at the pitch; should be severely punished so he can stop displaying this violent contuct again.

he should be banned simple as....he may be a genuinely nice guy and he may have even been provoked but no matter how much he says sorry his actions have to be punished this type of behaviour cannot be accepted.

Simple's, violent conduct is violent conduct....Don't matter if you are a nice guy or not. 6 match ban and half a million Euro's fine. If he were an MP fiddling his expenses i'd say 6 months in prinson....sorry, being a nice guy is sometimes not good enough... "take the ban and be a man"

Gattuso should receive a similar ban to Drogba when he berated the referee after the Barcelona game last year

I think Gattuso should be punished, he has done something wrong, end of story, if he had done that in the street, he wouldn't get away with it ,so why should he now, saying sorry isn't good enough.

Joey Pearson (Manchester United fan) says...
Perhaps Mr Ancelotti should be worrying about his own teams' troubles than getting involved in others. Just because he may be a good man doesn't mean that he should go unpunished or be treat leniently - although in the same instance nor should he be made an example of. What would have been the ban if he did this to a player? 2 or 3 game ban for violent conduct? Seems about fair, as long as it is not some measly fine which he will not notice leaving his bank balance.

Gattuso is well known to be ''caveman like'' in his aggressive style of play and demeanour . Ancelloti excusing his behaviour as out of character is typical but unacceptable . Gattuso has shown an absolute lack of respect. but I can guarantee you that his punishment will be a lot less severe due to the double standards that plagues the so called regulatory bodies
