Hyypia unhappy at losing captaincy

Liverpool ace Sami Hyypia has revealed his disappointment at losing the captaincy at Anfield.

The Finnish international was surprisingly demoted to vice-captain earlier this week, with Steven Gerrad stepping up to take the armband.

Hyypia admitted he was unhappy at losing the captaincy, but that he respected the decision.

"There was nothing dramatic over changing the captain. I didn't say anything because it was the manager's decision and I respect that," Hyypia told Finnish daily Ilta-Sanomat.

"Of course, I am not happy about it but on the other hand now, I can just concentrate on playing.

"Being captain in England is not an easy job because it demands lot from you, even outside the ground."

Hyypia insists the decision will not have any affect on him and believes it could make Gerrard an even better player.

"I am the same lad whether I have the armband or not," added Hyypia.

"I believe that captaincy will bring Gerrard to a new level. He's young and talented English player, who has a great future ahead of him. He's a great lad on and off the pitch."

Liverpool have endured a disappointing start to the season and Hyypia thinks that the Liverpool fans have not seen the best of Sami and the team yet.

"I am not happy about our start to the season. We have to play better and we will do that," said Hyypia.

"If the change of captain helps, then it's a good decision. I feel relief now that I can get use to idea that I am not captain anymore and I don't feel myself as a worse player because I don't have the armband anymore."
