Liverpool have confirmed that Jamie Carragher has sustained a broken rib.

The centre-back was substituted 15 minutes from the end of Liverpool's match with Sunderland on Saturday after a collision with Reds goalkeeper Jose Reina.

Tests on Carragher's injury have now revealed that he has broken a rib and suffered a pneumothorax, or collapsed lung.

Carragher's injuries will not require further treatment, but he is likely to miss Tuesday's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second leg clash with Toulouse.

Defensive replacement

However, Sami Hyypia is expected to be fit to face the French outfit despite breaking his nose against the Black Cats.

The Finland international successfully completed a training session on Sunday and should replace Carragher in the Liverpool defence against Toulouse.

"Sami has a broken nose but will be available for the second leg of our Champions League qualifier," said a statement on Liverpool's official website.

"Jamie underwent a series of investigations on Sunday morning which confirmed he has a broken rib and has also developed a pneumothorax.

"He will continue to be monitored on Sunday but at this stage no further treatment will be required."
